Grover's Diary
Day 1
I have finally received my Searcher's license. I can finally find Pan--I am finally worthy enough to find Pan. He must be out there, he has to be out there. I don't know why he doesn't want to be found, but I will do my best to find him. I will show the others satyrs that I am the best, that I can do this instead of the others. I'll show them. I just hope my friends will be okay when I leave, especially Percy. He's--he's a good kid. He'll become a true hero some day, whenever that will be. Maybe Annabeth will keep him in line to become a hero just like Hercules. Man, was he a true hero.
I need to start moving. I won't find Pan writing in a diary!
Look out, Pan: I'll find you.
Day 6
No sign of Pan in North America--or South America. I had been talking to other Satyrs around and they have scoured every inch of those continents, finding no trace of Pan anywhere. Frustrating, I know. So it's why I'm boarding a ship in a few minutes to go toward the other continents. I think I'll start somewhere in Europe and work my way around the world. Although, I wonder if those Satyrs were lying to me when they said he wasn't anywhere on North or South America--maybe they didn't search that rain forest hard enough. I'll go back to that rain forest if I can't find him anywhere else.
I got in touch with Percy the other day, although the connection was so bad. I don't think I've ever had that much trouble getting in contact with anyone! Maybe he's hard at work at the camp and doesn't want to be bothered--or maybe Annabeth is bothering him so much that he doesn't want to be bothered by me, too. That's probably the case. I swear, those two will probably never stop fighting.
Ah, I see the ship's being boarded. I hope the trip isn't too long. And I hope the ship has some food on deck--I'm starving!
Day 14
Stupid boat had some troubles when it started sailing, so we had to stop on some island in the middle of the ocean. At one point, you could still see Florida. I really want to travel the world here, guys, not be stuck on an island with nothing--
There's something up ahead, but I can't tell what it is. I came here just a day ago, but I haven't found anything interesting like this. "Here" is I think the Bermuda Triangle, but these kinds of surroundings sort of blend together after wandering around for days. I am still very hungry, but maybe this cave has something inside.
I think I'll take a look. Let's hope there's something delicious inside, mmm.
Day 39
It is here.
It is coming back, isn't it?
I don't know how long I have until it returns, but I'm stuck here. I have been caught by Polyphemus, a cyclops here, and I'm stuck in his cage because he thinks I'm his bride or something. Great, right? I need to be rescued, but it looks like there's no time to save old Grover from the Sea of Monsters.
I've tried getting in contact with Percy and Annabeth, but no luck. I'll try again tonight.
I think it's coming back. I hope it does not find this. Please don't find this.
I must go.
Pan, wait for me, I will come for you.

Endnote: Imagine if you were stranded on an island, first on a journey to find someone that you had been looking for your entire life, and then you suddenly get captured by a monster and need to be rescued. I felt it was necessary to bring out Grover's thoughts and feelings about the situation. While I only chose four days to represent, younger readers (fifth and sixth graders) can imagine themselves on what is happening to Grover between one entry to the next, giving them the opportunity to let their imagination go and feel as though they are adding to the story. Not only this, but Riordan gives the readers this chance to expand on their imagination, as there is little about Grover in the cave itself being captured by Polyphemus, and while the readers get a sense of the kinds of trouble he is in because of the connection with Percy, there's not much left to wonder what is going on in general. This way, it allows the readers to think about the character in The Sea of Monsters while the main plot exists as well.
