"Best Books 2010." School Library Journal. Ed. Marlene Charnizon, Joy Fleishhacker, Daryl Grabarnek, Trevelyn Jones, and Luann Toth. School Library Journal, 1 Dec. 2010. Web. 18 Apr. 2012. <http://www.schoollibraryjournal.com/slj/printissuecurrentissue/888269-427/best_books_2010.html.csp>.
This website offers a list of best books that were up for being the best children/young adult novels of 2010. This site was important to my paper because it shows how regarded of an author Rick Riordan is, especially with novels outside of the Percy Jackson series (and the sequel that came with it).
Field, D. M. Greek and Roman Mythology. New York: Chartwell, 1977. Print.
D.M. Field's book gives general background information on not only the Gods in the myths, but also general stories that have been told in Greek and Roman mythology and the heroes within the stories. I was given great background insight into the place where the myths happened, who the Gods were in a general sense, and some stories behind the God's origins. It helped me understand the stories as an overall backbone to the entire mythology the Greeks and Romans believed in.
Kripke, Eric. "Supernatural." Supernatural. CW. Sept. 2005. Television.
Eric Kripke created Supernatural in 2005 based on supernatural lore throughout the history of cultures. It was useful to my project mainly because of the video created for the book trailer. It was also useful because of the similarities in characters in Supernatural compared to the Percy Jackson series, as well as the similarities in how the characters in each media are portrayed as heroes.
"Mark Twain Award Previous Winners." Missouri Association of School Librarians. MASL. Web. 18 Apr. 2012. <http://www.maslonline.org/?page=MT_previouswinnners>.
This website lists the winners of the Mark Twain Award, from 1972 until 2010. Rick Riordan was said to have won the award both in 2008 and in 2009. It is important to my research because it gives proof of the kinds of awards he has won as an author.
Riordan, Rick. The Battle of the Labyrinth. New York: Hyperion for Children, 2008. Print.
The fourth book of the Olympian series adds with the story of Percy Jackson stopping Luke and the army he is building for the fifth book, The Last Olympian. It helped with my project because it focuses more on the characters that have been helping Percy in some sense. It gave more insight into these minor characters than any of the other books.
Riordan, Rick. The Last Olympian. New York: Disney Hyperion, 2009. Print.
The fifth and final book of the Olympian series finishes the climatic storyline Riordan puts the readers through with the characters that have grown with them. By now, the readers are given a sense of who the characters are and wish for the plot to be settled by the end of the novel. It was helpful in my research in the project because it gives a bit of closure to the main characters for the readers partaking in the novels. Also, more insight about the Titans and the Gods were provided, and were not just used as background information like in the other novels.
Riordan, Rick. The Lightning Thief. New York: Miramax /Hyperion for Children, 2005. Print.
This book is the first of the Percy Jackson series, and it is the first time the readers are introduced to Percy and his friends by Riordan. This book is the basis of my entire project, and gave me the background information I needed for the characters in general.
Riordan, Rick. The Sea of Monsters. New York: Miramax /Hyperion for Children, 2006. Print.
The second book of the Percy Jackson and the Olympian series, Riordan goes a little more in-depth about the characters and the relationships they have with other characters, including the Gods. Along with The Lightning Thief, this book also is the basis of my project. It helped me gain a sense of who the Gods were and how they came into play in all of the stories.
Riordan, Rick. The Titan's Curse. New York, NY: Miramax / Hyperion for Children, 2007. Print.
Riordan's third novel in the Olympian series deals with a more emotional theme of losing a friend or searching for a friend in the first place. It delves more on the importance of friendship and what the main characters feel about their friends. This is also the book where the Titans make an appearance, and it was important to my project because it gave me information on who the characters really are. Before, the characters mainly dealt with things with action, but it was important for Riordan to get readers to connect with the characters.
Riordan, Rick. "Welcome to the Online World of Rick Riordan!" The Online World of Rick Riordan. Gray Digital Group, 2010. Web. 18 Apr. 2012. <http://www.rickriordan.com/home.aspx>.
This website offers a lot of insight as to who Rick Riordan is, and it comes from himself as a person. While some of the things about his work could be biased because it is based on his opinion, the autobiographical section of the website helped me in my research immensely. It gave me an idea of who he is not only as an author, but as a person in general. A young reader can gain a lot of knowledge as to who Riordan is, and also look into some of his works he has written.
Rose, H. J. Gods and Heroes of the Greeks. London: Methuen, 1958. Print.
Rose's book had given me a more detailed idea of who each of the Gods (not just Olympians) were, and how they originated. The book goes in-depth about the numerous stories each God is in, who the heroes are and their stories becoming heroes, and also minor myths brought forth by the Gods as well. It helped in my research because I was able to better understand the Olympian Gods (and minor Gods) as well as the mythology the Greeks and Romans believed in during the era.
